I NOTE with interest David Ross’s report on the revitalising of the aluminium smelter at Fort William (“Smelter to create 2,000 jobs in west Highlands”, The Herald, March 4). It mentioned the plans include housing, training and infrastructure. Will this include upgrading the approach roads to Fort William, which at the moment are not fit for purpose?

I would imagine that any finished product that the smelter will produce would need to be transported south. Is this just another scheme, funded by the taxpayer, to keep the Highlands sweet? I do hope not.
