As regular as the waxing and waning of the moon, the plea emerges (Letters, February 13 & 17) for restitution of the City Union Link and put forward as a possible Crossrail connection for train services that, it is so claimed, would be of undoubted benefit having been overlooked and ignored by successive Government planners and sundry transport organisations.
It conceivably could come to pass following on from completion of current electrification plans and those hopefully that will follow on, namely the routes to East Kilbride, Barrhead/Kilmarnock and possibly across to Barassie as well as the Maryhill "loop", the latter creating a circular service via Glasgow Queen Street Low Level.
Be that as it may, much thought and deliberation would have to go on the provision of services from and to wherever desired bearing in mind they would in all probability be additional to those using lines of route that will be enhanced and fully occupied once the aforementioned plans come to fruition. It would be a necessity to have a Glasgow "stop" created on this link that would cater for those availing themselves of another train service to and from the city over and above any passengers going or coming further afield.
Clear-headed and practical, not wishful, thinking is the criteria for this proposal to give it any chance of possible success.
