ENVY the fresh-faced hopefulness of the young lad on the left as he travels by train to London in 1953 from Glasgow Central for the annual Scotland versus England football match. Any tartan scarf would do for the trip and it is only in recent years that manufacturers have come up with scarves that have Scotland written on them to divert you from rustling up your own. Goodness knows how the cigar-smoker came up with a tartan-lapelled jacket - probably some long-suffering wife who was nagged into sewing it.

Alas by the seventies and eighties, bad behaviour amongst some Scottish fans in London led to the annual game and the British Home Championships being abandoned, which is a shame as it was the only championships that Scotland was guaranteed to at least make the semi-final. The year this trio went, it was a two-all draw with goals from Hibs Famous Five player Lawrie Reilly, although I've a funny feeling cigar smoker probably wouldn't remember the game that well.
