ASJoe Eyre (Letters, October 25) writes "The facts (about slavery) should be well known". Educational and other links between Scotland and Jamaica should be encouraged. We should learn more also about the enslavement of Scots, sometimes disguised as "indentured labour" in and after 1746 (and earlier). Slavery did not end with the abolition of the West African slave trade. As a medical doctor in Malawi (at that time Nyasaland) in my 20s I met a man in his 90s who had been captured by slave raiders about the age of 8, sold, freed, and eventually became an Anglican priest. A book he wrote, From Slave Boy to Priest by Petro Kilekwa, may still be found through the internet.
