AFTER all of the attacks on Craig Joubert by current and former rugby players and the constant squealing to the ref for a penalty to be awarded during every game, can we finally rid ourselves of the notion that rugby has a greater sense of fair play than other sports (“Rugby star in call for World Cup referee to be sacked”, The Herald, October 19)?

It has been somewhat unedifying to read the vitriol from giants of the game such as Gavin Hastings informing us what he would do to the referee if he ever saw him again. Mr Joubert, in all probability, made a mistake that required an instant decision in the heat of battle. As ever, it took multiple replays for many to spot this mistake but the bullying and haranguing of the man reflects poorly on the “sportsmanship” in the noble game. Perhaps the gentlemen have adopted the hooligan approach off the field as well as on?

WHY are we Scots such ardent whingers, and why do we always seek to blame somebody else for our misfortunes?

The reasons we lost? Indiscipline in key areas of the pitch and failing to secure our last line-out ball.

End of.
