Politicians used to be more comfortable strolling down the street than they perhaps do these days. This is Harold Wilson, not actually Prime Minister at the time, meeting shop steward leader Jimmy Reid during the famous UCS work-in when the shipyard workers decided to continue working to save their yards rather than go on strike when the then Tory Government under Edward Heath tried to close them. Wilson had already been Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970, and would return again to the post after Heath in 1974.

As he joins Jimmy Reid in Govan they are followed by a crowd of schoolchildren - hopefully this picture was taken on a Saturday and they were not actually dogging school in order to meet him. Today of course the children would be interrupting the two men to have their pictures taken with camera phones, in order to get selfies to send to their pals. Wasn't Harold lucky to live before those days.
