Now you may think this is just an old Glasgow bus, but look closer and you will see wires above it as this is one of the last of the Glasgow trolleybuses which ran in the city between 1949 and 1967. On paper they were far superior to the trams they replaced - quieter and faster. However these were the two things that Glaswegians actually disliked about them. They were nicknamed "the silent death" as the only noise they emitted was a dull whine, and Glaswegians, more used to hearing the clatter of trams, would often walk out in front of them without looking, and with tragic results. Their acceleration, far quicker than the trams, appealed to the drivers who took off at great speed - leaving passengers sprawling on the floor before reaching their seats.

Unloved, and with the cost of electricity and maintaining the wiring soaring, they were quietly removed from service.
