WHEN attempting to make an unflattering comparison between Michelle Thomson and Alastair Carmichael, which is somewhat undermined by his use of emotive over-the-top language (Mr Carmichael is apparently going to court “to cling on to his MP’s salary”), James Mills (Letters, October 5) apparently considers it praiseworthy of Ms Thomson that she is making herself “available to help the police with any investigation they may undertake”. Mr Mills appears however to be unaware that this is one of those meaningless phrases put out by lawyers to put a positive gloss on their client’s situation, and seems to think that other, perhaps less virtuous folk than Ms Thomson, leave a card on their door saying they will be unavailable for the foreseeable future when the Old Bill comes knocking.
