Patrick Harvie, writing about the VW scandal, stated that "the downfall of the 'People's Car' should remind ministers that people matter more than corporate profits" (VW's car crash should serve as a wake-up call to governments about the toxic legacy of air pollution, Comment, September 27). I see no evidence that big business values people over profits.

I am unimpressed at the exhibition of new-found environmental concern by car owners who feel aggrieved that their German cars' computers have been skilfully programmed to always indicate that emissions standards are being met (Switzerland bans sales of Volkswagen Group cars as fallout from emissions scandal continues, News, September 27)

Like most drivers, as long as my vehicle passes the MOT, I don't care what emerges from the exhaust pipe. If I gave a fig about the environment, I'd have bought a bicycle.
