I can empathise with Iain AD Mann (Letters, September 25). During the Children in Need evening appeal on Friday, November 21, in 1986 we were inundated with 142 phone calls. After a four-hour bombardment and eventual contact with the BBC, silence prevailed.

Apparently human error had occasioned the TV screening of the wrong number. On reflection it was an interesting experience as to the relentless volume of pest calls which were to follow over the next three decades. Fortunately, that nuisance is now a "ring" of the past due to the installation of an effective call blocking box.
