I write to comment on Ros Altmann's article on UK pensions in the personal finance section of The Herald ("Pensions shake-up is under way to protect standard of living for the elderly", September 26).

Prior to being chosen by David Cameron to be minister for pensions in the UK Government, and elevated to the House of Lords, Ms Altmann was a highly respected pensions expert, who could be relied upon to give unbiased opinions on all pension-related matters, without regard to any vested interests. Now, as Baroness Altmann, she writes a panegyric of praise for "this UK Government" and reminds us "how close we came to saying goodbye to the secure retirements offered not just by prudent policy decisions but by being part of a successful, single UK-wide economy".

Prudent policy decisions? Secure retirements? Baroness Altmann must surely be aware that the UK has one of the poorest state pensions in Europe.
