Many thanks for the excellent article on one true, living, people's champion (The people's champion, Sunday Herald Life, September 20). Bob Holman truly deserves to be recognised as one who practices what he preaches, not only in his professional but in his personal life.

His career in social work started just a few years before mine and though we were never colleagues, he was held in high regard by those among us who were involved in the birth of a new, demanding profession.

Never distracted by the side issues and constraints placed upon us by local authorities, Bob remained true and unshaken in his ideals in dealing with poverty, unemployment and also preventative work. He is a man who chose to live among those whose lives he strove to improve.

His name will be remembered typically alongside others such as Keir Hardie and George Lansbury, both of whom he admired and emulated.
