It is my experience that all dogs understand Gaelic ("Dog is a Gaelic good boy", The Herald, September 22). If a stray dog follows you when walking in the country, just say "truis" (get lost or go away). The dog will hesitate briefly before high-tailing it in the other direction. My Gaelic speaking grandmother taught me this and it never fails.
