Would it have been beyond the capabilities of the EU leaders to assemble the migrants at various points and put on military aircraft to fly them into safer countries instead of leaving them to trudge across countries for hundreds of miles with nothing but hope for a better life? If an operation like this had been carried out then surely identities and numbers of migrants could have been monitored and base camp set up to cater for them. How much longer are these poor people going to be left to fend for themselves in wretched conditions with no idea of what the future holds?

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
