So today is actually my birthday, but before I begin celebrating the last year of my 20s I thought I would share with you my top 10 date locations. When you’re excited about a date we already have enough to worry about; hair, clothes, money, remembering their name (only joking) but the hassle of deciding where to go is one thing you shouldn’t need to stress about. Location is everything - that’s why they named a TV show after it! Too loud, too boring, too busy there’s more to take into account than we often realize. With the list below I promise you won’t go far wrong.
Slouch
A personal favourite of mine located within the bar hub that is Bath Street. With its dark and moody lighting you won’t even care what you’re wearing just enjoy the array of obscure bourbons, great food and awesome live music.
The Corinthian
With four floors of drinking, dancing and dining and the upcoming arrival of the Cotton Club Casino in the basement The Corinthian offers a little bit of everything. Save it for after payday though, drinks are a tad on the expensive side and you’ll need your finest evening wear.
Hummingbird
Another of Bath Street’s finest it’s just really nice! Trendy, but not pretentious. Another bar with different rooms if you fancy switching things up a bit. Check out Wednesday’s hump day cocktail party for a midweek pick-me-up.
Kelvingrove Park
So you’ve met someone you really like but you are super skint and it’s still only the first week of the month? Why not suggest a casual stroll in Kelvingrove, well at least the nice bits anyway. When the weather’s nice Kelvingrove is something else, the frisbys, footballs, cute dogs and those things the cool kids tie from tree to tree and balance on are all out making for some great people watching under a Glasgow sunset. It is probably a date best planned for a summer's day though.
The Flying Duck
Free toast need I say more? Ok I will, hidden away behind the shops we all buy our sweets from before we go to Cineworld The Flying Duck offers a variety of lively and even livelier nights to choose from. For a date check out the Monday night pub quiz. Sometimes if the chat drys up it’s good to have something to occupy you both, instigate topics of conversation and ultimately have a bit of a laugh wih. Entry is free and prizes include toy ducks, alcohol, toy ducks and toy ducks.
Xscape
Sometimes the pressure of sitting face to face for a few hours is too much for people to bare, if that sounds like you why not mix your drinks with some fun filled activities. Enjoy a drink in the newly refurbished Bar Varia overlooking the snow slopes and then grab a game of ten pin bowling. This way you can fill those awkward silences mocking your horrific bowling skills…and of course the shoes. Failing that relive your youth with a game of laser quest, bring a few plasters though it gets rough in there!
Bar Soba
Another personal favourite thanks to its superb west end location. The street art interior and exquisite pan-Asian cuisine is exceptional and a sure fire way of making an impression with your date. If it’s a nice and bright night take a stroll around the nearby Botanic Gardens to round off the night.
Yesbar
Hidden away in Drury Street enjoy your drinks with some delicious sliders and then head downstairs for some comedy from Glasgow's best upcoming comedians hosted by the lovely Julia Sutherland. (They also have that black and white tiled floor that we all secretly want for our kitchens).
Boteco Do Brasil
What’s not to love about this place! If you want to show your date just how fun and cultured you can be this is the place for you. Wednesday nights are salsa night, two left feet or not show your date your game for a laugh by getting involved. All abilities are catered for and the food and drink are out of this world. Even if your date turns out to be a disappointment Boteco definitely won’t be!
Tingle
If you’re nervous and want to get hideously drunk then this is the place for you! No seriously drink responsibly and make sure your date gets home safely and all that but this incredible assortment of shooters is well worth a shout. Stay away from the ‘Mad Scientist’ though - Tequila, Sambuca and Absinthe do not belong in the same glass!
One to give a miss...
Cinemas
I’m actually never out of the cinema, but only go if there’s something you both really want to see, save it for a third date though cinemas aren’t meant for a first meet.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
