I NOTE with interest your report on pubs losing sales (“Cut in drink-drive limit hits pub sales”, The Herald, September 15). Does Paul Waterston, chief executive of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) realise that alcohol if drunk in quantities above the now-legal limit of 50mg per 110 ml of blood is an addictive drug and becomes a killer if people consume too much and get into a car and drive?

I have a suggestion. Why not provide a bus to take clients home? Publicans could act together, especially in cities. I don’t suggest that these buses should be free; they should be paid for by the people using them. In villages and small towns they could reduce the transport to the capacity of a taxi or small bus. Most people, however, who drink in small towns or villages will walk home or arrange to be collected by family.
