TRANSPORT Scotland's pilot study aimed at making towns and villages safer by introducing a 20mph speed limit (“Five towns to join pilot for 20mph zones on trunk roads”, The Herald, September 17) may be a laudable objective but one must question how effective it will be.

The present 30mph limit in rural areas like Kippen is ignored by many motorists and not enforced by the police. Cyclists ride unhindered on pavements. Is there any point in bringing in a lower speed limit which will not be enforced, ignored by many and obeyed only by those who are law-abiding in any case and hardly present a danger?
