YOU report the swearing-in of the new rector of Edinburgh University (“Rector is sworn in”, The Herald, September 15), but omit to mention his illustrious Glasgow roots. Steve Morrison comes from an established Jewish family who ran a delicatessen on the south side of the city for many years. I was at Edinburgh University with him in the 1969s when he told me about his great grandfather’s arrival with his family at the Broomielaw, from one of the Baltic states, as they escaped persecution.

An exasperated customs officer, having difficulty understanding their heavily-accented, broken English, trying to establish the family’s name, rolled his eyes heavenwards and spotted the street sign above his head – Morrison Street. Licking his pencil he told them: “I’m putting youse doon as the Morrison Family, OK?” Of such incidents, genealogical nightmares are made.
