MY thanks to Drew Allan for his update on acronyms and abbreviations used in social media (“OMG: A brief guide to acronyms”, The Herald, September 8), although I don't expect to receive many or have occasion to use any of them any time soon.

They have been around of course for a while in less frivolous disciplines. For example, in medical notes, NAD: no abnormality discovered, CVS: cardiovascular system, RS: respiratory system.

And some you don't want to see in your records – GOK: God only knows, STD: sexually transmitted disease, and NFK: normal for Kilwinning (or Kilbirnie, Kilmarnock, Kilmaurs, and anywhere beginning with K), and soon.

R Russell Smith,

96 Milton Road, Kilbirnie.
