If you have been glued to Netflix watching the new UK series of One Day starring Ambika Mod as Emma Morley and Leo Woodall as Dexter Mayhew, you might be wondering if it’s based on a true story.
The latest romantic addition to Netflix is a new adaption of the 2011 film which featured Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess playing the original on-screen roles of “Em and Dex”.
But as their love story has gripped the nation due to one of the most talked about endings on TV this year so far, are the characters of Emma and Dexter based on real people?
Is One Day a true story?
Fun fact: episode 13 of #OneDayNetflix (yes, that episode) was written by original author @DavidNWriter.

One Day on Netflix is not based on a true story but the series is based on the popular novel written by David Nicholls.
However, the characters of Emma and Dexter are “loosely inspired” by different people from David’s own life, reports IMDb.
Emma and Dexter met when they were students at the University of Edinburgh and spent the day after graduation night together, getting to know each other closely – that date was July 15, 1988.
From then on, One Day, which was filmed in Edinburgh, tells the story of the duo on the same day over 20 years.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
