Travel officials in Spain have issued a major warning to UK residents wanting to travel to the European nation.

This comes amid calls for action to be taken as passport chaos affects airports throughout Spain.

At the weekend, around 1,000 passengers were affected at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport as many were unable to make connecting flights due to large queues.

The President of ALA, Spain's association of airlines, Javier Gándara, said the escalating issue was “completely unacceptable” when speaking with reporters at Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Mr Gándara demanded that the Spanish Government take action to alleviate the issue adding that this must be done to ensure the "necessary resources are available in all Spanish airports to handle the influx of tourists”.

Spain is set to receive a massive influx of UK tourists with 13 million tourists from the UK travelling to Spain between July and September 2022.

Mr Gándara added that “there are not enough members of the National Police” and said that tourists going on intercontinental flights are finding it difficult to make it to their plane on time.

He warned that soon a large number of Brits would descend on Spanish airports, placing huge pressure on passport controls.

He added: “It is the first perception that tourists who visit us have and that the image is of endless queues or missed connections and this is the last thing we need."

Airport operator AENA told reporters that the border force is not responsible and that the issue is down to the lack of National Police officers.
