Firefighters are monitoring the site of a large wildfire which broke out on the Campsie Fells north of Glasgow.

Six appliances were sent to he blaze last night, with plumes of smoke visible from across the city. 

Crews returned this morning after withdrawing last night with the fire thought to be under control.

A SFRS spokesperson said firefighters that one fire appliance was at the scene today.

Footage was been shared online showing smoke coming from the hills, located 19km to the north of Glasgow.

One resident living near The Campsie Fells took to social media to say they are “under a blanket of smoke”.

Another local wrote that the smoke from the wildfire was covering their house “with ash falling on us”.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said this morning: "We were alerted at 3.54pm on Tuesday, 6 June to reports of a fire in the open at Campsie Fells, near Fintry.

"Operations Control initially mobilised one fire appliance to the scene, increasing to six appliances in total.

"As of Wednesday, 7 June we currently have one fire appliance in attendance."
