Jack Morrocco is widely recognised as one of Scotland’s most distinguished contemporary painters. With a career spanning over 50 years, he is celebrated as a modern-day Scottish Colourist, renowned for his masterful use of light.

His work is highly regarded today and will continue to be appreciated by future generations.

Born in Edinburgh, Morrocco attended Madras College, St Andrews, before studying at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. From 1970 to 1974, he trained under his uncle Alberto Morrocco, alongside Jack Knox, David McClure, and Dennis Buchan.

'Making a Connection' is truly what Jack Morrocco’s paintings aim to achieve—whether by evoking a sense of presence in his landscapes or connecting references in his still life compositions.

His work is diverse and often organised into themes, making it challenging to categorise under a single label. This exhibition, therefore, features a selection from each genre, offering a cross-section of his artistic exploration.

What truly sets Jack apart is his versatility. “I get bored easily,” he admits. “The idea of painting just one type of subject doesn’t keep me creatively engaged. I need to be flexible and move between disciplines whenever I choose.” This adaptability shines through his work, each piece a testament to his boundless imagination.

Whilst remaining true to a proud lineage, Jack has developed a powerful and effective distillation of his own encompassing still life, figurative and landscape work. Whilst technique and application of paint may vary with subject, each work shares the mature handling and vibrant, sensuous palette so associated with the artist.

Then, immerse yourself in the serene beauty of his lily pond series, inspired by walks with his daughter in St Andrews and later by his own lily ponds. These works evoke a tranquil sense, inviting reflection amidst calming waters.
