The family of the former First Minister has thanked supporters for messages of condolences as they issued a statement saying the memorial service tomorrow is 'at capacity' but will be live-streamed. 

Alex Salmond's memorial service will take place at 11am tomorrow morning at St Giles' Cathedral after a private funeral was held for him in Strichen at the end of October.

The 69-year-old Alba leader died suddenly in North Macedonia last month. He had been speaking at a conference in the country when he suffered a heart attack.

His family have thanked people for their messages of condolences as they urge anyone who is not a registered guest to watch from the livestream which will be available on BBC iPlayer and online from 10.30am onwards.

A spokesperson for the Salmond family said:  “As we prepare to pay tribute to Alex, we wish to thank everyone who has contacted us over the last few weeks to express their condolences. It has meant the world to the entire family.

“Please be aware that the memorial is at capacity. Only guests who are registered can be permitted entry, and for security purposes photo ID must be presented.

“For those many who can’t join us in person, the BBC, Sky News and STV News have an agreement to share resources to cover the memorial.

"The BBC will stream live coverage of the service from 10.30am on both the BBC News website within a live page, and as a separate stream on the BBC iPlayer.”

An array of guests, from politicians to celebrities, are expected to attend the service. 

Scots singer songwriter Dougie MacLean will perform his song California and The Proclaimers will play their song Cap In Hand. 

Alex Salmond's niece, Christina Hendry will speak at the service as well as his former colleague  and now acting leader of the Alba Party Kenny MacAskill and SNP MSP Fergus Ewing,  Both politicians delivered eulogies at his funeral last month.
