A section of a major motorway running through Scotland is to be closed overnight to allow “urgent” resurfacing works.

Motorists are being diverted travelling south through South Lanarkshire on the M74 while the stretch of road between Kirkmuirhill and Uddington is closed.

Works is being carried out to replace the hard shoulder after it deteriorated due to a contraflow put in place for the Nethan Viaduct bridge works.

The road will be closed between 8pm and 6am each night, with work lasting from Thursday 28th November to Sunday 1st December. Traffic management will be removed by 6am on Monday 2nd December.

During the closures a diversion will be in place with southbound traffic leaving the M74 at Junction 9 and following the B7078 to return to the motorway at Junction 12.

A spokesperson for motorway overseers Amey has apologised for the short notice of the closures.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

All schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.

A statement from Amey said: “This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.”
