A new distillery is to be launched in a Scottish glen.

The Bothy Distillery is scheduled to begin operations in spring 2025.

Scottish Government agency Forestry and Land Scotland has hailed local business, The Gin Bothy, as the first commercial enterprise to move into Glen Prosen.

It is described as a "major step to the full utilisation of the buildings at the head of the glen and forms part of FLS’s wider strategy to create new jobs and bring economic benefits to the local community".

FLS brought the land and buildings at the head of Glen Prosen, one of the Angus Glens on the southern edge of Cairngorms National Park, into public ownership in 2022.

“The business has strong local roots that will only be enhanced by moving to the glen; this new venture will support existing and new jobs in the area as well as fostering sustainable tourism.

“Discussions with several other interested parties keen to set up in FLS-managed Glen Prosen are at an advanced stage and we look forward to connecting more people with the evolving landscape restoration here.”

Kim Cameron, Gin Bothy founder, said: “I grew up in the glen neighbouring Glen Prosen, so I know how special the area is. With just one road in and one road out this remote location is one of a kind. Its seclusion and natural beauty provide the perfect backdrop for crafting spirits that truly capture the essence of Scotland, while allowing us to champion sustainability and preserve the landscape for future generations.

“Our vision for The Bothy Distillery is about more than whisky, it’s about creating a place where people can connect with Scotland’s natural beauty and heritage. We’re proud to be working with FLS as guardians of this special place and sharing its rich history as part of our whisky experience.”
