GLAZED windows and doors play a pivotal role in home insulation and improving energy efficiency, moreover, the range of styles and colours now available in UPVC and new composite materials can greatly enhance the visual aspect of a home, as do the new must-haves such as bi-fold doors, French doors, and low-profile glazing.

But when it comes to replacing, repairing or installing new windows and doors, how do you find a reputable company?

Based in the Ayrshire town of Stewarton, Wilson Windows celebrated its 10th anniversary during 2024 – and while the decade has seen this highly respected family-owned firm grow exponentially to become the go-to installer/repairer of windows and doors throughout Ayrshire, CEO Darren Wilson is now looking ahead to the next decade and expanding the company into new areas of the West of Scotland and beyond.

“Expansion is now a key objective,” he says. “We have a great team here, including engineers, fitters, and surveyors, and together we have raised the bar and set a new precedent going forward for the supply and installation of windows and doors.

“Historically, the reputation of double-glazing salesmen was blighted by the aggressive sales tactics of a few rogue operators, including high-pressure sales pitches and limited time offers,” says Darren. “Already working in the business, I wanted to turn the industry’s poor image on its head and offer a professional, wholly customer-focussed service underpinned by honesty, efficiency and quality – values which I believe are fundamental in business.

“We fit and repair of all types of glass, and specialise in installing UPVC windows and UPVC doors and composite doors. We don’t do conservatories or anything else and have no plans to diversify,” he says.

“We stick with what we do best – and do it better, through investment in computer software and our 20-strong team of experts in their field, which enables us to offer our unique ‘live quoting’ system. This means we can price a job accurately and quote customers the best price possible, usually at the initial appointment. No gimmicks, sales tricks or discounts, which invariably stem from an overloaded price to begin with. Just fair, best value prices in return for a quality service.”

If the quote is accepted, an experienced surveyor will take precise measurements, note requests for internal and external colours and finishes, and draft a detailed contract. “Once the deposit is paid, we can then place the order – and the entire process can be completed in just two visits, which speeds up the delivery and installation down the line,” explains Darren.

Finance schemes are available and Wilson Windows guarantee all hardware (including hinges, handles and other moving parts) for two years, glass for five years, and frames and composite doors 10-15 years depending on the brand of door.

What also ensures this company’s service benefits from word-of-mouth recommendations going forward into new areas is attention to detail: no mess, no fuss installations completed by experienced fitters who finish one job before starting another; and having a repair service.

“If a window or door is not working as it should – or if, for instance, there is condensation within an existing double-glazed pane - we can have it assessed and only if it is deemed beyond repair by our engineer would we recommend replacement,” says Darren.

“If something can be fixed there’s no reason not to. However, we would generally advise old single-glazed windows be replaced with double-glazed units to improve both heat and sound insulation and increase a property’s value.”

Wilson’s expansion will also be boosted by use of social media – and distinctive branding, star of which is Wilson, the firm’s mascot, on its fleet of vehicles and publicity material. In addition, the company has a smart showroom at Unit 41, Magbiehill Park, Stewarton, where visitors can see a wide range of window and doors styles, colours and materials.

New for 2025, Wilson is taking computer software a stage further with the advent of a ‘virtual appointment’ system. “Building on our ‘live quote’ system, we can now provide an alternative to the traditional sales visit with a convenient Zoom call and complete the sales process in front of customers for the ultimate no-pressure sale,” adds Darren.
