The Scottish actor Peter Mullan has accused the No campaign of "blackmail" during the 2014 independence referendum.

Mr Mullan, who supported a Yes vote in 2014, made the comments during an interview about his role in the television drama After the Party, on Channel 4.

He was reflecting on the result of the vote in September 2014 which was won by the Pro-Union side by 55% to 45% and which followed a two year campaign.

“It was a very particular form of Westminster blackmail that dates right back to the earliest days of the British empire, ‘If you leave us, we will bankrupt you. There will be a hard border.’ And most insultingly of all, ‘If you leave us, you’ll have to leave Europe.

"To be a Scottish republican, and to have your fellow citizens who you love and adore fall for that kind of shit, and then two years later fucking Brexit comes along …”

Mr Mullan's remarks were made in today's Guardian where he was interviewed alongside his partner New Zealand actor Robyn Malcolm, with whom he stars in the television series.

The Pro-Union campaign group Scotland in Union and the UK Government were approached for comment.
