The three men arrested after a suspicious item was discovered at Buchanan Bus Station have been released without charge.

Police Scotland say the incident was treated as a credible threat, but the item posed no risk to the public and was ‘innocent in nature’.

Police had been called to the scene around 1pm on Wednesday and the station was immediately closed down. The nearby Glasgow Caledonian University campus was also evacuated while investigations were carried out.

Later on Wednesday, Queen Street train station was also shut, while the Subway was suspended while a controlled explosion was carried out.

Three men were arrested at the scene but police have now confirmed they have been released without charge and there is no threat to the public.

Superintendent Derrick Johnston said: "The initial report was treated as a credible threat and, as a precautionary measure and in accordance with procedures, the surrounding area was closed to the public and a cordon put in place.

"The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion after an assessment was made of the impact to nearby gas mains and local train lines.

"The item was then examined and confirmed to be innocent in nature, posing no risk to the public.

"All areas reopened by 9.45pm and I thank the public for their patience and understanding."
