The implications of next week’s US election result for Scottish firms which do business across the Atlantic will be debated at a special event.
The Scottish North American Business Council (SNABC) will host a presidential results brunch on Wednesday November 6, the day after polling closes one of the most divisive elections in US history.
SNBC has assembled a range of experts to discuss the ramifications for Scottish business at the office of law firm Burness Paull in Edinburgh.
Panellists will include Murray Leith of the University of the West of Scotland; Elizabeth Bomberg of the University of Edinburgh; Liz Lloyd specialist partner of Flint Global and a former strategic policy and political adviser to the First Minister of Scotland; John Penman, managing partner of 56˚ North; and Mark Diffley, founder and director, Diffley Partnership.
The election brunch will be followed on November 21 with a USA masterclass, at which the SNBC will offer a “quick, practical introduction” to trade opportunities in the US. More than 60 Scottish small and medium-sized enterprises will have the chance to meet US trade experts for a 'whistle-stop' tour of Scotland's top export destination. America continues to be Scotland's top international trading partner with around 17% of all exports entering the US, worth £5.5 billion.
SNBC will deliver the masterclass with partners including Burness Paull, United Airlines, State of Ohio, State of Pennsylvania, State of South Carolina, State of Kentucky, State of Connecticut; and US Tax FS.
Speakers will include: Laurie Farris, minister counselor for commercial affairs at the US Embassy London; Richard Lochhead MSP and minister for business; Nora Rothrock, managing director, USTAXFS; Kathryn Porter of US Consulate Edinburgh; Iain Ritchie, chief executive, Priocemx; Grace McGill, partner, Burness Paull; Dr Poonam Malik, Global Scot and chair of Microplate DX Limited; Karolien De Hertogh, director UK and Ireland atUnited Airlines; Jonathan Williamson, chief marketing officer, Emblation; Simon Catley, head of growth, Brain Wave; Suzanne Oliver, director of IP strategy, Scintilla; Katie Birrell, board director and head of international exports atmNairns Oatcakes; Poonam Gupta, chief executive of PG Paper; David Hunter, chief executive of Shot Scope Technologies; Dave Hughes, chief executive Novo Sound; and Karen Andre, sales and marketing director, LS Productions.
Allan Hogarth, executive director of SNABC, said: “These events will give Scottish business people a great opportunity to have your questions answered by an expert panel on the implications of the US election presidential results and address all your areas of concern, as well as to hear from Scottish companies which have already found success across the Atlantic who will share their experiences and top tips for you to learn from.
"You will also have the opportunity to meet representatives of five US States who can offer advice on where in the US you could consider setting up or exporting into.”
