A new hub for young technology entrepreneurs is being launched in Ayrshire with applications open to those interested in starting a business in the computer-led sector.

The Whetstone Tech Workshop Hub has been devised by Ayr Rotary and will provide a free nine-month programme based out of Prestwick Airport. It aims to create a communal space for collaboration in fields such as games development, website design, and mobile applications.

Mentor and volunteer support will also be available through the programme, which is supported by Scottish Government Minister for Business Richard Lochhead.

"Giving people support through mentoring and collaboration and introducing them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Scotland and the support that is out there is a way in which we can encourage people to think about becoming entrepreneurs and hopefully making their dreams become realities," Mr Lochhead said.

"One reason why I am excited by the idea of having a tech workshop and hub in Ayrshire is because it fits in extremely well with the vision we have as a country which we are backing with support for instance with the £42 million Tech Scaler programme with hubs across the country and that support is also available of course for anyone who wants to use the tech workshop as a first step and then hopefully take advantage of the wider ecosystem that is out there to help budding entrepreneurs in our country."

Kirk Ewing, an entrepreneur involved in the programme, said: "When you are applying for the hub opportunity the most important thing to do is to come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

"The hub offers a great opportunity to meet other like-minded entrepreneurial types, and that's what you've really got to do is look for the people that can help encourage you and help push you forward with your own career."
