Rail services running between Scotland's two major cities have been hit with delays and cancellations after a signalling fault hit the network.

Scotrail said that the problem occurred just after 7am this morning, with the system at Linlithgow affected.

Network rail said the fault was caused by a damaged cable. Engineers are on site.

Services were travelling at reduced speed as a result, with a knock-on effect for scheduled services.

Trains travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh from Queen Street via Falkirk High are affected, with some either delayed or cancelled.

The fault hit just as the morning rush hour traffic was beginning to access the network.

The rail operator urged commuters to check the timetable before making their journey, and said it would provide an update later.
