A Scottish bakery which was this year listed amongst the best in the world is set to close.

Twoeightseven first opened on Langside Road in Glasgow's Southside four years ago, as owners Sam and Anna Luntley sought to offer "a small representation of the good that Glasgow and Scotland have to offer".

Formerly of bakery47 on nearby Victoria Road, the duo's new venture soon proved equally as popular, with queues known to snake along the street from early morning on weekends.

Twoeightseven was later named in the 2024 La Liste Pastry Awards alongside some of the world's most talented bakers.

Last week, the Herald's food critic Ron Mackenna paid a visit to the bakery, scoring it an impressive 25/30.

He said: "That food? A sourdough, what else these days, roll. A big, robust, sprawling, crunchy then pillowy meal of a thing filled with thin sliced Scottish Gouda and Krautworks Sunshine Kraut.

"A meal in itself except I show some restraint: cut a section and then taste (excellent), bag for the family to try.

"Chestnut Oat and Honey Shortbread anyone? Crumbly, again super-moist and yet still solid and smacking of honey. This actually reminds me of my Mum's shortbread, never, ever hard in texture."

In a statement released over the weekend, the team behind twoeightseven informed regular customers that they had made the decision not to renew their lease when it ends next month.

It read: "We have some news that is not easy to share with you...

"We want to let you know ahead of time that we will be closing twoeightseven when our lease ends on November, 30 this year.

"twoeightseven has been a total pleasure - a project which was supposed to last 18 months and fill a gap during covid, but which has been such a joyful and successful venture that we find ourselves here almost four years in.

"However, in the spirit of life is short and the world is big: full of many exciting opportunities and amazing places, we have decided that it is time to shake things up and throw ourselves into the unknown - learn new lessons, find new rhythms, meet new faces and take on new challenges.

"A wise man once said: know when to stop."

The statement goes on to thank regulars for their custom and confirm that the final day for the bakery will be Sunday, November 24.
