Scott Hastings, the former Scotland rugby player, has paid tribute to his late wife, Jenny, on World Mental Health Day.

The 60-year-old went missing in Wardie Bay, Edinburgh in September near a wild swimming location in the Firth of Forth.

Mrs Hastings' disappearance was treated as a "high risk missing person case" due to her previous struggles with mental ill health.

She disappeared from the couple's Edinburgh home for 36 hours in March 2017 and walked for miles to the Pentland Hills while she was suffering from depression.

The couple would later lead a mental health campaign focusing on getting people active.

A family statement at the time of her disappearance said: "The Hastings family are absolutely heart broken.

"Jenny and Scott have a huge following of friends from all walks of life including those that work in the media and we ask that at this moment in time we are allowed to grieve privately with family members.

"For the time being we request that you hold off from messaging us directly and/or posting on any social media until further news.

"We know that you all care for us deeply and as soon as we hear any update from the police we will advise you accordingly."

At around 3.20pm on Saturday the body of a woman was found in the Hound Point area of South Queensferry, later confirmed to be the 60-year-old.

Posting on social media on World Mental Health Day, Mr Hastings wrote: "My wife Jenny faced her own mental health struggles with amazing courage and humility. She was the most beautiful and loving human being, who continually put others ahead of herself, often at the expense of her own health.

"Thanks to Police Scotland and their team of specialist search officers, the emergency services, RNLI, HM Coastguard and oceanographers who worked tirelessly to find Jenny. Their communication & support allowed us to cope at such a devastating time in our lives.

"I am so grateful to everyone who attended Jenny's Big Splash last month. We gave Jenny the most incredible send off & we will treasure her celebration of life forever and always.

"To everyone that painted a rock for Jenny, we laid them in our garden & on the breakwater at Wardie Bay, Edinburgh. Please paint a stone & place it in your favourite place to brighten up someone else's Mental Health Day?"
