An endangered zebra has arrived at Edinburgh Zoo as part of a breeding programme to keep the species alive.

Oberon is a Grevy’s zebra stallion and has made the move from Chessington World of Adventures’ zoo in England with the hope that he will mate with two of Edinburgh’s females before returning south of the border later this year.

Grevy’s zebras are named after Jules Grevy, a former president of France, and are mainly found in Ethiopia and Kenya but are the most threatened of the three species of zebras.

There are three full time Grevy’s zebra residents at Edinburgh Zoo with Oberon joining Azizi, Grace and Danielle.

Keepers at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland are hoping Oberon will mate with Azizi and Grace before returning to Chessington at the end of this year.

The species was named after the former French leader after he was given one by the government of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) in the 1880s.

It’s believed there are less than 2,000 of the species left living in the wild, despite an estimated 15,000 in the 1970s.
