Xsite Braehead will house the “world’s longest” indoor go-karting track it has been announced.

The new facility will replace Scotland’s only indoor ski slope which closed in 2022 due to safety concerns and skyrocketing repair and energy bills.

The new track is being developed by K1 Speed, a karting company with 100 venues across the world. K1 is investing £5.5 million with bosses saying the cash injection demonstrates their “confidence in both the Scottish market and the future of XSite Braehead”.

The investment is also set to create around 80 jobs, as it transforms the former Snowfactor site into a three-decked indoor track that spans over 1000 metres and holds 35 electric karts.

Kitty Vaughan, Head of UK Leisure and F&B at Pradera Lateral, XSite’s Asset Management team said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome K1 Speed to XSite Braehead making us the home of the world’s largest indoor karting track and e-sports venue. This exciting addition not only enhances our leisure offering but also reinforces our commitment to providing inclusive and engaging experiences for all visitors.

“K1 Speed’s innovative approach and dedication to community engagement align perfectly with our vision for XSite Braehead. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this flagship venue will have on Glasgow and beyond.”

The karts, priced at £15,000 each, are the most advanced in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 mph and accelerating to top speeds in seconds. The new site will span over 90,000 sq ft and is described by bosses at K1 as a “high-spec multi-level track, equipped with the latest in safety technology and advanced timing systems”.

In addition to the karting track, the venue will also feature a state-of-the-art e-sports lounge equipped with premium racing simulators. With its high-spec simulators featuring advanced gaming technology, bosses hope K1 Speed Braehead will be a prime location for hosting international e-sports competitions.

Matt Holyfield, Managing Director and Spokesperson at K1 Speed UK added: “Our goal is to provide a top-tier entertainment experience that appeals to both casual racers and serious competitors. The new K1 Speed Braehead will embody our commitment to innovation, safety, and fun, and we’re excited to bring this to the region.

“We chose XSite because of its vibrant community and love for motorsport and can’t wait to see the excitement this new venue will bring to Glasgow.”

Motorsport has seen a significant surge in audiences over the last few years, and this new venue is intended to serve as an incubator for future F1 stars, fostering a new generation of talent from Scotland.

The popularity of motorsports can seen particularly in the number of people spectating, following the success of the ‘F1 Drive to Survive’ series on Netflix, which has increased viewership by 58% in the USA and 39% in the UK.
