An ageing ferry which was due to return to action after an eight-month refit has been sidelined for a further week and a half – sparking problems through services to the Isles.

The MV Caledonian Isles, one of Caledonian MacBrayne’s oldest and largest ships, was due to return to the network on 23 September but broke down before it could be deployed on the Ardrossan-Brodick route.

It has now emerged that the ferry will need a further period in port after investigations revealed that the main gearbox on one side will need a full overhaul.

The abrupt cancellation of the vessel’s anticipated return means that temporary changes will have to be put in place on the Mull and South Uist route as other boats are drafted in as cover.

Sister ship MV Hebridean Isles will stay on the main Arran route, while MV Lord of the Isles will stay on the Islay service.

This will result in some cancellations between Craignure and Mull.

MV Clansman will cover the affected Oban-Craignure sailings on Saturday, providing cover for displaced traffic on what will be the busiest day of the week for Mull.

Meanwhile, MV Caledonian Isles will have its gearbox stripped down and replacement parts installed.

Once repairs are completed, alignment work with the gearbox and engine will be required.

It is anticipated that it may be a further 10 days before the vessel can return to service,  although CalMac said this is subject to change.

CalMac spokeswoman said: “We are very sorry for this further disruption, and we are extremely grateful to customers for their patience and understanding when their bookings had to be moved.

“Our teams are working closely with external contractors to ensure that MV Caledonian Isles can return to usual service as quickly as possible.”
