King Charles will address the Scottish Parliament at its 25th anniversary celebration in Edinburgh today.

The event marks a quarter of a century since the Scottish Parliament was reconvened.

Charles and the Queen will attend and meet First Minister John Swinney and other party leaders ahead of the King’s speech in the chamber.

They will then meet people from across Scotland nominated by MSPs as “local heroes” for their extraordinary contribution to their communities at a parliamentary reception.

The event began with the Crown of Scotland arriving at the Scottish Parliament with an escort and guard of honour formed by members of youth organisations.

The presiding officer will open the meeting of parliament and formally welcome the King and Queen

His Majesty will respond to the presiding officer’s remarks and address the Scottish Parliament.

The first minister and opposition party leaders are expected to make brief speeches, interspersed between Scottish cultural performances.

However, King Charles presence hasn’t been welcomed by all, including deputy Green Leader Patrick Harvie among them.

He posted a picture of protestors outside the parliament awaiting the monarch’s arrival with signs that said, ‘not my king’.

He added: “Great to see people gathered outside the Scottish Parliament for the 25th anniversary celebrations, with a special welcome for some of our guests today.”
