Plans to develop a pioneering subsea cable manufacturing plant that would create 900 jobs in Ayrshire have won multi-million pound backing from the UK Government.

XLCC is in line to receive up to around £90 million funding from the UK Infrastructure Bank to support the development of the plant on the site of the former coal terminal at Hunterston.

The plant will produce specialised high voltage cables of the kind that could be used to transport electricity generated by windfarms off Scotland to other parts of the UK.

XLCC is also targeting export markets.

The drive to secure a rapid increase in the amount of renewable energy generated around the world to help reduce emissions is expected to result in strong demand for cables.

John Flint, UK Infrastructure Bank’s chief executive, said:

“Industry projections indicate that demand for subsea cables will soon exceed existing supply chain capacity.”
