Motorists navigating a busy commuter route through Glasgow have been granted a reprieve from traffic delay misery after emergency roadworks were completed early.

Scottish water had warned of “disruption” and put a traffic management plan in place along Pollokshaws Road, on the city’s Southside, to deal with an ongoing sewer leak earlier this month.

It had been expected the work would last until early October, but it has now been completed - three weeks ahead of schedule.

One lane of the major road had been closed, with traffic lights controlling the flow of vehicles between Langside Avenue and Minard Road.

This sparked long delays leading back along Langside Avenue, as well as onto Pollokshaws Road.

It has now been announced that the emergency traffic management will be cleared by early on Thursday afternoon.

The water authority said that a nearby property had experienced flooding, and the source of the leak was traced to a pipe buried five metres below the pavement outside.

Polloskshaws Road, which merges into Kilmarnock Road, is the main thoroughfare through Shawlands and leads onto Giffnock and East Renfrewshire.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We have completed repairs and backfilled and reinstated the pavement and road and removed all traffic management.

“This is nearly three weeks earlier than we had anticipated and given how busy the area is we are particularly pleased to have been able to complete the work.

“We are grateful to everyone who has worked with us to allow us to carry out the repair quickly and as always, their patience and understanding is appreciated.”

Temporary traffic lights were manned 12hours a day and these were extended when Scotland played Poland at nearby Hampden Park at the beginning of the month.

A special walkway was also constructed to keep the pavement running alongside the excavation open for pedestrians.
