Lambs at Newton Stewart yesterday were of improved quality, achieving an average of 284p/kg or £127/head and selling to £169 gross for a Charolais cross from Over Airies or to 313p/kg for Beltexes from Mount Pleasant. Cast sheep remained firm, topping at £189 for a Cheviot tup from Holm and Mules sold to £176 for Knockcoyd, while Blackies peaked at £82 for Balmurrie.

Dairy cattle at Ayr on Tuesday topped at £1,250 for a freshly calved Holstein Friesian heifer from Ditton. A narrow weather window meant a relative shortage of calves and stirks that sold to £580 for an Aberdeen Angus cross bull calf from Kaimhill, with heifers peaking at £560 for a British Blue cross from Old Barn.

Stirks peaked at £1,290 for a White Shorthorn cross bullock from Broom. Heifers averaged 311p/kg and sold to 330p/kg for both North Boig and Rowanston, while bullocks sold to 310p/kg for a Limousin from Lyonston or to £2,157 for a British Blue from Deaconshill. And cast bulls sold to £2,160 for a Limousin from Mid Skeog.

Breeding sheep at Thainstone on Tuesday averaged £173/head and sold to £300/head for continental gimmers from Bogiefeulach, while store lambs averaged £88/head and sold to £128/head for Texels from Tullochcoy, Crathie. A large number of island consigned lambs averaged £78/head and sold to £119/head for Grunnafirth.

Prime lambs at Kirkwall on Tuesday held up well at an average of 255p/kg and sold to 273p/kg for Texels from Hermisgarth, while store lambs averaged £86/head and sold to £106/head for Dutch Spotteds from Hobbister. And cast sheep peaked at £200 for a Texel ewe from Dawn Cottage, Holm.

Prime cattle at sold to 324p/kg for a 580kg Charolais from South Stanger, with store steers peaking at £1,985 for a 685kg Aberdeen Angus from West Nistaben, and store heifers averaged 296p/kg and sold to 355p/kg or £1,560 gross for a Limousin from Colligarth Farms, Sanday. OTM cattle sold to 235p/kg or £1,880 gross for the same vendor and Chapelbrae respectively.

New season lambs at Dingwall on Tuesday sold to 289p/kg or £133 gross for Kinnahaird, with feeding sheep peaking at £150 gross for Ballindalloch Home Farm.
