A section of one of Glasgow’s best-known streets has been closed off because of a “dangerous building”.

Ashton Lane, home to popular bars and the famous Ubiquitous Chip restaurant, has been shut from Ashton Road to Ashton Lane North.

The cobbled thoroughfare, which is hugely popular with students and visitors to the city’s West End, was closed after Glasgow University notified the city council about problems with the Molema Building, which overshadows the lane.

It is understood access is still being allowed to some premises. The Molema building, formerly known as the Gregory Building, sits adjacent to the land on the University Campus.

A spokesman for the council said: “Our building standards team has been notified by staff from Glasgow University of their concerns about the condition of a parapet on the Molema Building on Ashton Lane.

“A road closure between Ashton Lane North and Ashton Road is now in place to protect public safety while Glasgow University undertakes work to make safe their building.”
