Cyclists will be able to lock their bikes up for free in Glasgow city centre from this weekend.

Cyclehoop, which provides storage containers at 20 centre locations, will be available free of charge from September 21 to October 5.

The offer is being run through a partnership with Glasgow City Council to mark the one-year anniversary of the services’ launch and the UCI World Road Cycling Championships in Zurich, which was hosted by Glasgow last year.

Twelve of the Trips bikehangars are decorated with the iconic UCI rainbow stripes to commemorate the global cycling event.

Glasgow is presently in the midst of a revamp which plans to transform the city into an integrated network of pedestrian and cycle routes.

The Avenues Project is dubbed “the largest project of its kind in the UK”, encompassing work across the city centre and outlying areas. Additional projects in other areas, including Byres Road, are set to have their cycle lane networks expanded as part of an 'Active Travel Strategy'.

“We’re thrilled to offer free cycle parking to the people of Glasgow whilst celebrating the UCI World Championships this year,” said Anthony Lau, Founder and Design Director at Cyclehoop.

“Trips has proven to be a popular affordable and sustainable transportation option, and we hope that this initiative will encourage even more people to give it a try.”

Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for Climate, Transport and City Centre Recovery, added: "The cycle parking units in the city centre have proven to be a great success in the first year of the project, providing safe and secure hireable storage for those cycling into the area to work, study or visit.

"The chance to use the units for free during the current UCI World Cycling Championships - a year after Glasgow hosted that event - will encourage even more people to use the scheme."

The service is delivered by Cyclehoop as part of the council'#s Avenues Project, funded by Places for Everyone, a permanent active travel infrastructure programme backed by Transport Scotland and administered by Sustrans.

Trips is accessible through the Cyclehoop smartphone app.
