Parts of Edinburgh have been transformed as the filming for renowned filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein gets underway.

On Friday the 13th, extras for the new movie, which is being filmed in Glasgow and the Scottish capital, could be seen taking over the Canongate area.

They were dressed in eighteenth-century clothes and top hats, as carriages lined the street which was covered in mud to mask the modern concrete.

The Mexican filmmaker is writing and directing the film, which is being developed under the working title of Prodigal Father.

At the centre of Frankenstein are Jacob Elordi (Saltburn, Priscilla), Oscar Isaac (Dune, Inside Llewyn Davis), and Mia Goth (X, Emma).

Principal photography began in February in Toronto and is expected to wrap later this year.

The classic Mary Shelley novel follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

What’s On Netflix has reported that del Toro's Frankenstein will be “set in Eastern Europe in the 18th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorious, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before–in order to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.”

Scenes for the movie have already been shot on location in North East Scotland, and further shots are expected to take place in Edinburgh’s Bakehouse Close and Makars' Court areas.
