A Paisley building which was once the largest Baptist church in Britain is to be transformed into a multi-purpose event space.

The management of Coats have confirmed the venue will be transformed into a space for up to 1000 people, 130 years after the Gothic Church was first built.

It was known as the Baptist Capital of Europe and was named after philanthropist and devout member of the Baptist community Thomas Coats, who was from the town with his family building the church in his memory.

The Coats building dominates the Paisley skyline and is currently used as an award-winning wedding venue, but from November this year it will be turned into a space for event goers and music lovers.

It has also been used for filming Outlander in the past.

The venue is set to reveal an expansive programme which will extend over the winter months into 2025, and it won’t just be music. It will include a wide range of events from children’s entertainment to festivals, screenings and season celebrations.

Venue director, Mark Brysland, believes it will offer a special place for people in Paisley and all over Scotland to enjoy a night out.

He said: “We are beyond excited to expand the current usage of the venue to the public – more specifically, music lovers everywhere. Coats is a very special place, not only to Paisley, but to Scotland, and it’s always been our vision to marry its cinematic backdrop with incredible music.

“Moving forward, we will have our own programme of events, as well as events brought to you by local promoters and organisers too. The plan is to offer a jam-packed line up of entertainment, and a brand-new place for people to come and enjoy a night out.

“Coats is truly a magical place and we can’t wait to welcome everyone through its doors.”

Coats was originally built in 1894 but fell into disrepair and was only salvaged and transformed with a renovation fund by a community fundraising programme.

Now, the venue can be distinguished by its breathtaking nave with seating for 1000, a large ballroom and an eight-arched crown spire – as well as multiple function suites, bar and a full-service kitchen.
