A Scottish woman has been killed in an avalanche in Argentina.

The body of Andrea Marshall was recovered on Wednesday evening following an extensive search and rescue operation on Cerro López in the province of Río Negro.

According to the information released by the Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) of Río Negro, a preliminary autopsy report indicated her cause of death as asphyxiation.

The 27-year-old is understood to have been living and working in Valle de Arán in Catalonia, Spain as a ski instructor.

The avalanche occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the vicinity of the Club Andino shelter, which is used by tourists and experienced skiers who visit Cerro López.

According to reports in Argentina, she was one of three people caught up in the landslide. One man was rescued before nightfall, while another man was rescued after being buried under the snow for more than 10 hours.
