Council staff have been forced to move swans from a Glasgow park after they were targeted by kids who were throwing stones at them.

Two adult swans and a cygnet have been moved to a new location by Glasgow City Council’s Countryside Rangers after another cygnet was found dead in Springburn Park, while another three went missing and it is feared they have also been killed.

The remaining cygnet remains underweight and concerns were raised about the safety of the birds following reports of young boys and girls throwing stones at them on a number of occasions over recent weeks.

Police have been informed about the stone throwing incidents and the birds will continue to be monitored daily in their new location with the council thanking volunteers who keep an eye on the swans at the park in Springburn for assisting with the move.

A council spokeswoman said: “Our Countryside Rangers have been forced to move three swans to safety from the pond in Springburn Park following appalling attacks by children throwing stones.

“Two adult birds and a cygnet were moved today after one young bird was found dead and another three others went missing feared dead.

“We would not normally disturb wild birds by moving them, but felt we had no choice on this occasion.

“This type of animal cruelty is shocking and members of the public are asked to report wildlife crimes to the police by dialling 101.”
