American Airlines is reinstating its daily seasonal route between Edinburgh and Philadelphia next year.
Edinburgh Airport said: “The airline will be back in Scotland’s capital for the first time since 2019, with its first flight from Edinburgh departing on 24 May 2025.”
It added that the service will operate until October 5 next year and will be served by a Boeing 787-800 aircraft.
Edinburgh Airport declared that “North America continues to be one of the most attractive inbound and outbound markets for Scotland”.

It added: “The arrival of this service represents a further boost to travellers looking to explore the US and Scotland's tourism industry.
“The Philadelphia flight sees Edinburgh Airport – now part of the VINCI Airports network - reconnect to all of its pre-Covid transatlantic routes, and with a host of new additions also being added to the schedule since then there's now more choice than ever before.”
Gordon Dewar, chief executive at Edinburgh Airport, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming American Airlines back to Edinburgh as they reinstate their direct seasonal service to Philadelphia. This sees us reconnecting - and significantly surpassing - all of our pre-Covid transatlantic routes, demonstrating the significant North American demand for Edinburgh and Scotland.”

"Edinburgh was a key dot on the map for American Airlines when we first launched our Scottish service back in 2015 and we are excited to return in summer 2025. With this route, our customers in Scotland will have access to one of our fastest-growing US hubs in Philadelphia, from where they can connect to explore new destinations the US and beyond has to offer.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
