A new restaurant welcomed its first customers this week in a city neighbourhood which has previously been described as a ‘hot-spot’ for fine dining.

Mara joins the vibrant foodie landscape of the Shore in Leith, in a two-storey space which enjoys views across the waterfront.

Taking its name from the Scottish Gaelic word for ‘sea’, the restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating and a menu of small plates and sharing boards.

This includes IJ Mellis charcuterie and mezze platters of Great Glen venison bresaola, Aleppo chilli hummus, muhammara and house pickles.

Also on the menu is a selection of larger plates ranging from ‘low and slow’ lamb to seafood tacos and beef short rib nuggets with buttery confit garlic.

A “well-curated” drinks offering complements the food menu, with a rotational wine list spanning red, white, rosé, orange and natural alongside craft beers and cocktails inspired by creatures from Scottish mythology.

Simon Keane, director at Mara, said: “We are excited to be launching Mara in the thriving district of The Shore at Leith and are delighted to have secured such a standout location for what will be an excellent new addition to the local neighbourhood.

“When it comes to hospitality, The Shore has a truly unique appeal.

“With Mara’s offering of delicious food, an impressive drinks menu, and warm, friendly atmosphere, we look forward to welcoming patrons and very much hope they will enjoy the experience.”

In February this year, The Herald reported that Edinburgh had been named as a “fine dining hotspot” following another year of Michelin Guide success.

The city is home to five Michelin Star restaurants, three of which are located in Mara’s new home of Leith.

This includes Heron, The Kitchin and Restaurant Martin Wishart.

Mara is located at 58, The Shore, Leith.
