Motorists navigating a busy commuter route through Glasgow face traffic misery after emergency repairs were announced.

Scottish water has warned of “disruption” and put a traffic management plan in place along Pollokshaws Road, on the city’s Southside, to deal with an ongoing sewer leak.

The water authority said that a nearby property had experienced flooding, and the source of the leak was traced to a pipe buried five metres below the pavement outside.

One lane of the major road has been closed, with traffic lights controlling the flow of vehicles between Langside Avenue and Minard Road.

There is no timescale for the work, which is being carried out by heavy machinery.

Polloskshaws Road, which merges into Kilmarnock Road, is the main thoroughfare through Shawlands and leads onto Giffnock and East Renfrewshire.

Initial investigations suggest it will take until early October 2024 to complete the repair and reinstate the road and pavement.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “This is an urgent repair and unfortunately given the location and depth of the damaged section of the sewer some disruption is inevitable.

“We are using specialist, heavy machinery which requires a lane closure to keep our team and road users safe while the work progresses.

“We appreciate there will be delays and we would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding while we carry out this much-needed repair.”
